Duvets and Comforters, Are they the same?

Confused between a duvet and a comforter? Some retailers in the US confuse duvet to a comforter, one says: “. . . since you will be placing your comforter inside the duvet, it is important that the appropriate size be selected (Bed, Bath and Beyond, Sizing U Your Bedroom).” A comforter is the top layer of bedding, usually consisting of two layers of fabric, filled with either down or fiber filling. Down refers to the natural feathers used to fill cushions of pillows, bedding and upholstery. The material traps air to provide soft comfort. It is also a very warm insulator often used particularly in comforters.

Comforter
, an American English term is a type of blanket intended to keep the user warm and can also be used as a mattress pad. Like quilts, they are generally used with a set of sheets. In the United Kingdom, they are only known as special types of padding duvets. A comforter or a quilt can be used as independent bed covers.

Duvet, though similar to a comforter and/or a quilt in that it is also composed of two layers of fabric with an insulation substance, the difference lies on the fact that duvet is to be placed inside a duvet cover and not inside the comforter. A duvet cover is a giant pillowcase-like covering that fits over a duvet. It is open on one end, typically closed by buttons, ties, or a zipper.

Duvets originated in rural Europe and were made from the down feathers of eider duck. It is a French word meaning “down”. It is used on a bed as a blanket. Duvets are still commonly used in Europe as the most common form of bed covering. In some European countries duvet is referred to as any thick, warm blanket. In most parts of the world, comforter traditionally go on top of sheets and blankets, duvet is a single covering instead of the combination of these set of bedding.

Is there a difference between a duvet and a comforter? Whatever the distinction is, no matter how people in different parts of the world regard comforter as duvet, or duvet as comforter still, the fact remains that both are blankets that give warmth and comfort during sleep. They are the same as far as usefulness is concerned.
