Where are you now, in hell or in heaven?

Were you faced with this most befuddling question whether or not there are places called ‘heaven’ and ‘hell’? This concept is as clear as mud to people. According to Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda, a prolific writer, “if you act according to moral principles, you can create your own heaven right here on earth. But when you violate them, you can feel the hell-fire on this earth itself” If everyone tries to lead a respectable life, we can all enjoy real heaven, a cloud nine in this world. To reward virtue or to punish vice, there is no need to create heaven or hell. In this world, virtue and vice have inevitable reactions.

Let me share to you a story I read from the book, Why Worry? by Dr.K. Sri Dhammananda. The story is entitled, where is heaven and hell? According to the story, there was once a monk who preaches heaven and hell, his favorite subject. Getting tired of listening to the monk, one of the devotees stood up and asked: ‘Tell me where this heaven is and hell? If you cannot answer me, I will call you a liar!’ Being an innocent person, the monk became afraid. He kept silent. This made the man angrier and shouted: ‘Speak to me or I’ll beat you up!’The monk gathered his wits and quickly replied, “Hell is around you now, with your anger.’ Realizing the truth, the man began to laugh. He then asked: ‘Where is heaven then?’ ‘It is now around you, with your laughter,’ the monk replied.

Heaven and hell are what we make of our lives. They exist in any part of the universe where there are living beings. Separately? No, there are no separate places. At this very moment, where are you now? I am in heaven when I am on my comfortable bed with my favorite soft pillows and linens and enjoy its comforts while sleeping.
